After spending the better part of the past three years competing for a future life in politics – president, vice president or a senior role in the White House – Governor Christie could soon be in contention for a job that would give him a megaphone in the country's largest media market: sports talk radio host.
A blurb from Northjersery.com validates this claim they report, "WFAN 660-AM, the region's dominant sports-talk radio station, will 'be looking to do stuff' at the end of the year, when longtime afternoon drive host Mike Francesa's contract with the station ends, said Mark Chernoff, the station's program director and vice president of its parent company, CBS Radio New York. Christie, whose name has been rumored as a possible replacement for Francesa, is among 'plenty of candidates' the station is contemplating to fill the void left by Francesa, Chernoff said."
So at the end of 2017, Mike Francesa, the G.O.A.T. of New York Sports Talk Radio will be leaving WFAN New York. WFAN has been quiet in terms of the replacement for Francesa. Truth be told, nobody will be able to replace the guy. Say what you want about his arrogance and his act he puts on, he gets ratings and viewers and his shows are ALWAYS entertaining. I’m a massive Francesa fan and happy to be apart of Mongo Nation.
Replacing Francesa is no easy task. His show with Chris “Mad Dog” Russo was excellent before the two parted in 2008, but Mike Francesa kept the show afloat and the afternoon drive on WFAN has been a staple for sports fans in the New York/New Jersey area for the past 20+ years.
As for Frances’s replacement, names like Joe Benigno/Evan Roberts, Boomer & Carton, and Katie Nolan have surfaced over the past few months as replacements. Then this week, it is confirmed by Program Director and Vice President of WFAN Mark Chernoff that Chris Christie is in the running. Christie has made 10 subbing appearances in for Boomer and Carton in the morning the past year and has made it clear that politics in probably not in his foreseeable future after his term as NJ Governor is over in December.
Now, before I get into my opinion on this, let me make a stance clear. I’ll never take a stance on politics on the blog. I do sports, not politics, just not my thing. If you know me, you know my political stances on everything.
That being said, I think Chris Christie as the new host of the afternoon drive is a WONDERFUL idea. If you have listed to his cameos on Boomer and Carton the past year, you know Christie is actually a very knowledge sports fan. He’s a huge Mets fan which is good for the area, however, he is a Dallas Cowboys fan and that won’t fly in this part of the country. Christie also recently called out Phillies fans basically calling them scumbags, which is hilarious and entertaining. No matter your political views, if you have time to listen to Chris Christie on WFAN in the morning when he’s on, do it. He’s better than Chris Simms and Kim Jones for sure.
P.S. I don’t think Christie is the best guy for this job. I would LOVE to see my girl Katie Nolan get it. But, he would be an interesting host. A blog on Katie will be coming soon!
